I went back this morning and found the old homeless guy's tent. It was open and uninhabited. Everything inside was dripping wet - it was so sad. I had brought him a sandwich and hoped to take him to Walmart to get some dry shoes and socks, but that wasn't meant to be.
Maybe he did end up in a shelter overnight. I'll check the tent again over the next few days... I didn't go inside and invade his space, but I can tell you there were no needles, no alcohol bottles, no trash - nothing - in the area of his tent.
Not all homeless fit the stereotype.
